I don’t eat meat. But, I still remember the flavors of some of the food dishes my Grandmother and Mother would cook for me. Before I became a Rastafari I would visit some of the Jamaican food Restaurants, so I am pretty confident I know my stuff. Plus, Jamaican food is so vast, you can be vegetarian and still enjoy flavorful Jamaican food without the meat.
- Jamaican Curry Goat – This Jamaican food dish is so popular and so good. Mostly men request it at Jamaican food restaurants. Before I became vegan, this was my favorite Jamaican food dish.
- Jamaican Jerk Chicken – Jamaican Jerk Chick is probably one of our top 2 dishes we are world Renowned for. Its spice, hot, and tastes really good. You can buy the Jerk Sauce at the supermarket and cook it at home. I did this once, I put way too much Jerk Sauce.
- Jamaican Jerk Pork – I think this food dish is a favorite ofmany people (non Rastafari) Before I became a Rastafari I loved to eat me some Jerk Pork. Try it if you get a chance. Tasty. I am remembering form over 10 years ago.
- Ackee and Salt Fish – This is known as Jamaica’s “International” dish. Ackee and Saltfish is eaten, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
- Jamaican Run Down – Jamaican Run down. Jamaican run down is so commonly cooked in Jamaican culture that its often overlooked. Jamaican run down is a breakfast that is made with salt fish tomato, black pepper, oil, scallion. It tastes salty and we cook it with some plain dumplings on the side. Makes a great breakfast, or snack. Sometimes we eat it for dinner too.
- Jamaican Oxtail – Ok I have a confession. Out of all the flavors of each individual Jamaican food, Jamican oxtail has the best flavors. Don’t ask me what they cook it with I do not know off the top of my head….but you should cook this at home. You will be blown away by the way it tastes. Trust me.
- Jamaican Fried Fish – Jamaican fried fish. Just thinking about makes me want to go back to Jamaica. Jamaican fried fish is a food you eat when you want some healthy comfort food if that makes sense. Jamaicans will often request fried fish is they are tired of eating Chicken or if they are vegetarian but still don’t mind eating fish. (like me)
- Jamaican stew Chicken – This is still my favorite Jamaican food dish. I am not crazy about eating Chicken anymore. I seek it out about once a month. The taste of Jamaican stew Chicken is one your palette will never forget.
- Chicken Foot Soup – Chicken foot Soup. Chicken foot soup tastes great when you are in the mood for it. Sometimes if you are not feeling well, or feel like you wan to eat something full of nutrients Jamaican foot soup might be the answer. Jamaican people cook it so good and it doesnt cost a lot of money to make.
- Jamaican Curry Chicken – Jamaican curry chicken is delicious so many people admire Jamaica for this dish. Jamaican Curry chicken is another meal that some people think every Jamaican eats. Well I take that as a compliment.

How to Cook for a Jamaican Man
A Jamaican mans mind-set may be different from yours when it comes to the types of food he likes to eat and the flavors enjoys. I created this blog post to provide some tips on how to cook for your Jamaican man so that he is feeling happy and satisfied at the end of his meal! Enjoy! Here are 3 tips, just for your knowledge, before we address what Jamaican food is best to cook for your King.
- Setting the Mood– If you are planning to cook some food for your Jamaican man, be sure the mood is right. Don’t have too much noise in the preferred dining area, and be sure the entire space, and more specifically his eating space is clean and clutter free. Jamaicans are very picky about cleanliness especially when and where they eat.
- Jamaican man Taste Buds! – Your Jamaican mans taste buds are probably different from your own. His taste buds are used to food bursting with Caribbean flavors and Caribbean seasonings. If he was raised by a Jamaican Mother, then his intestinal tract is used to these special flavors too. When you serve your Jamaican man food, just know he expects it to taste good. If it does not taste good, he will be truly disappointed, actually his taste buds will be truly disappointed.
- After the Meal –Jamaicans in general like to enjoy a lot of quiet time. That is just our Culture. I find that after a meal is a time when many Jamaicans would rather not engage in too heavy conversation. After your Jamaican man eats his meal. Give him his space to digest his food, and enjoy the feeling of being satiated. He will appreciate that you thought of him in this way. If he wants to engage in conversation after he has finished his Delicious meal, allow him to be the one to initiate it with you and not the other way around.

If you want my opinion…if it’s your first time cooking Jamaican food, I would try cooking the Jamaican stew chicken. Do a run through before that special day, then on that day you will be more prepared.
More tips to Cook for your Jamaican Man
- Make sure the food is piping hot– Jamaicans don’t like food that is kind of hot they like it piping hot.
- Try to serve food that is heavy – Jamaicans people are used to eating food that is not only flavorful but also heavy. So, that when we eat it, we don’t feel hungry after wards
Don’t be afraid to use some pepper and some spices– I think a lot of Jamaicans expect food to be spicy and have some pepper in it. Serve the hot sauce bottle “on the side”…this is common Jamaican culture.
- Include a fresh leafy Salad – I don’t know why, Jamaicans love having Fresh leafy greens on their dinner plate. I think fresh salad goes well with all the spices that people are used to eating in the Caribbean. In case you were wondering Jamaicans typically like french dressing with their salad or Ranch.
- Big cold tasty drink – In Jamaica many of the drinks are very cold and very flavorful. Meant to cool you off and provide a little sweetness for the tongue. Give your Jamaican man a big tall cold tasty drink with his Jamaican food….He will love you for it. We are not picky about the type of Juice just as long as its cold…but…since you asked….Jamaicans love to drink …pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, Grape Juice, Lemonade
- A Large Serving is best! – I almost forgot…in Jamaican culture, to serve a Jamaican person a small plate of food is sort of disrespectful…It is always best to serve a large portion of food so that the person doesn’t have to say, “Can I have some more please?” So, be sure the food is high and wide on the plate. Very Important!!!
- Bring him his food In Jamaican culture it is common that the woman brings the man his food where ever he is. Yes, and that they may not enjoy a meal together. Jamaican women don’t take it personal. They Just get on with their duties. You may consider doing the same for your Jamaican man. But, just keep in mind if you do it once, he may expect it again and again.

Jamaican Curry Goat Cooking Recipe
Jamaican Curried Goat Ingredients/Steps
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 ½ lbs. (700g) goat, cut into small cubes (buy it cut already its easier)
- 3 large onions, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons curry powder
- 2 large potatoes, diced
- 2 ripe tomatoes, diced
- 3 cups (750 ml) chicken stock
- 1 tablespoon wine vinegar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 bay leaf
Jamaican Curried Goat Cooking Steps
Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, and brown the meat in batches. Remove the meat with slotted spoon and set aside.
Saute the onions and garlic in the drippings until soft but not brown, takes about 5 minutes
Stir in the curry powder and potatoes, and cook for about 3 minutes to release the curry flavour.
Add the tomato, stock, vinegar, salt and paprika. Return the meat to the pan, cover and simmer for 1 ½ hours. Add ½ cup(125 ml) water if the mixture become too dry. Add the bay leaf and cook for 30 minutes more until the meat is tender. Remove the bay leaf and serve with plain rice or Jamaican Rice and peas.

Jamaican Jerk Barbecued Ribs
You will need…
- 1 Cup of Jamaican Jerk Marinade
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
- 4 pounds of pork spared ribs
- About 1 ½ cups of barbecue sauce
How to Prepare
Combine the Jerk Marinade, sugar and vinegar. Add the ribs and turn to coat lightly. Marinate in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours. Let the chilled meat come to room temperature before grilling.
Prepare a low fire in a charcoal grill or preheat a gas grill to 225 degrees fahrenheit. If you’re using a charcoal grill, when the coals have burned down, rake them to the side.
Set a drip pan in the center of the fuel bed and arrange the coals around it to provide indirect heat.
If you’re using a gas grill, place the drip pan away from the burner.
Place the ribs on the grill over the dip pan, cover the grill, and cook for 4 – 5 hours, turning and brushing frequently with the marinade. Add more coals as needed during the cooking time to keep the fire at an even 225 Fahrenheit . Brush the ribs with the barbecue sauce during the last 15 minutes of cooking.

Jamaican Curried Shrimp
You will need….
- 3lbs. Spanish Town Scotch Bonnet Shrimp
- 2 oz. (60 g) unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced
- 1 – 2 scotch bonnet or jalapeno chilies, deseeded and minced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 4 ripe tomatoes, diced
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 teaspoon minced fresh parsley
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- Little bit of salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Picka peppa sauce or steak sauce.
- 1 ½ lbs (700g) medium shrimp.
- Peeled and deveined
How to Prepare
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add the onion, bell pepper, chilies and garlic, and sauté until the vegetables are tender but not browned. (about 5 minutes)
Add the tomato, lime juice bay leaf, parsley and sugar. Season with salt and pepper, and mix well.
Simmer, uncovered, until the sauce is slightly reduced, about 5 minutes.
Remove the bay leaf and stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Picka peppa sauce. Add the shrimp and cook until they turn pink. (About 3 minutes) serve with rice
