Trying Jamaican food for the first time might be a little intimidating. Here is a list of Popular Jamaican Foods to help you.

  1. Jamaican Curried Goat – Curried goat is a great meal to try for someone who like to eat meat and likes to eat curried foods. Curried goat is one of Jamaicans leading meals.
  2. Jamaican Ox Tail – Jamaican Oxtail is a Jamaican food meal some Jamaicans cannot live without. I used to love to Eat Oxtail. Oxtail is delicious. The gravy they make the food with is unforgettable. If you eat it once, you are garanteed to eat it again.
  3. Ackee & Saltfish – Ackee and Salt fish is one of Jamaican most popular meals world wide. Ackee and Saltfish is mainly eaten for breakfast but it can be eaten for dinner too. So, Ackee is a fruit, but we eat it like a vegatable in Jamaica. It comes on your plate a dull yellow color and honestly it looks like scrambled eggs but, it tastes almost tasteless. This is the reason we Jamaicans eat it with salt fish. Together these two taste amazing. People order this meal so much at Jamaican restaurants in Toronto that they will often run out of it.
  4. Jamaican Stew Chicken – Jamaican Stew Chicken is my favorite Jamaican food hands down. The flavor is “out of this world!” I promise you, you have not tasted anything like Jamaican Stew Chicken. If you are a Chicken lover, You will love Jamaican Stew Chicken.
  5. Jamaican Jerk Chicken -I think Jerk Chicken is probably the most ordered Jamaican food dish, ordered by non-Jamaican people. Jerk Chicken is very spicy, and i do mean, the hot type of spicy. Its great for people who enjoy eating hot foods.  (See the Photo at the beginning of the post)
  6. Rice and Peas – If you want to have the real “Jamaican foodJamaican-Style-Rice-and-Peas-3 experience” You have to have your meal with “Rice and peas.” rice and peas, makes your Jamaican food that much more plentiful and it tastes great. Don’t ask me how the Jamaicans do it…I don’t know, I just know I always order  Rice and Peas, with every Jamaican food meal.
  7. Jamaican Beef Patties – Jamaican Beef patties are a great way to eat some delicious Jamaican food “on the go!” Jamaican beef patties are often sold at a Jamaican Food Marts, or Caribbean style grocery store, or even in some Jamaican Restaurants. They are about the size of your hand and are usually filled with nice tasting spicy beef, or some spiced up vegetables. There is a place on Eglinton avenue in Toronto, at Oakwood,  that sells a variety of Jamaican Patties. The most popular is definitely  the Jamaican Beef Patty.

Looking for a great Jamaican food Restaurant in Toronto? Why not try my absolute favorite Jamaican Restaurant, “Ritz?”
